Networking for Success

It is never too early to learn the art of networking.

Networking is an essential tool for job seekers. it may be the single most effective way to getting the job of your dreams. Networking is not just a good way to secure jobs; it is a tool that can help you in various aspects of your life, from moving up the corporate ladder to meeting yout future life partner.

You may think you have plenty of time to pick up this all-important skill before you step into the working world. However, cultivating this habit as early as possible can help you make the most out of your connections in college and beyond. Here are a few things you could get started on the network to success.

Build a contact list
Networking is an active, ongoing process in which you identify people who can provide information, advice, and best of all - more contacts! Ways to identify and make new contacts include:
Extra-curricular activities. These are great opportunities to make friends from other colleges. You common interest is a good conversation starter, and you can then progress to other topics like study tips and career choices.
Social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Blogger and online forums which enable you to join common interest groups and make new friends. This is one good way to extend your circle of contacts even if you have not personally met them.
Talking to parents of friends. Working adults are one of the best ways to learn about the various career choices you can make. Finding out first-hand information on a career that you are interested in is better than reading about it in books and websites.

Planning is everything
Once you have identified the various avenues that can present you with opportunities to network, the next step is to target specific individuals for a relationship establishment that can benefit in the long run. To build your self-confidence, you can start with people who are more approachable.

Preparing to make contact
Once you have made the necessary arrangements, and if they are working in an industry you are interested to join, you should first research that industry, in order to be a potential candidate. Find out more about career challenges, professional development, overall work environment and sources of job satisfaction but avoid asking about the salary range of the jobs on offer.

Follow up
Keep in touch with your contact, occasionally following up with thank-you notes and updates on your career choices. By building long-lasting relationships with your contacts, you would have created a pool of individuals you can later use as referrals to get internships and even jobs. However, ensure you obtain permission from them first.

Ask about vacancies
You may ask your contacts if you are allowed to visit their workplaces, or if you can work part-time there during your semester break to gain some first-hand experience of the industry they work in. If they are still in the company after you have graduated from university, you could even send them a copy of your curriculum vitae to pass on to the hiring manager should there be any suitable openings.

It is never too early to start cultivating the habit of networking, so that it becomes second nature to you by the time you graduate from university. It is a vital skill to have as it may help you land a good job even without sending out a single formal job application.

“GELE – Global English Learning Environment”

The English Language Education plays an especially important role in moulding today’s global learners in every aspect of knowledge and preparing them towards a solid language that gels well in this multicultural, interdependent world. Take the Information Technology world for example, it is a known de facto that the Internet and World Wide Web really only works as great unifiers if you speak English. Several possibilities can be envisaged. A significant change in the balance of power – whether political, economic, technological or cultural.

Global learners are emerging tremendously and English being the first lingua franca has become an apt symbol for the themes of globalisation, diversification, progress and identity addressed in their special editions. English is the global language because of its positive and profound usage everywhere in the world that no other language in this borderless world has ever been spoken by a mother-tongue majority. Take television programmes, the Internet and real-time communication for instance, all these have increasingly added to the achievement of language teaching goals and grasping of world-wide audiences.

I will be presenting, “GELE”, whereby the use of the Internet in sync with traditional methods will synergise learning experiences in all forms – be it in the conventional classroom learning environment or to the online learning symbiosis that helps strengthen English Language Education in Global Learning. GELE means Global English Learning Environment that is globalised, envisaged, liberated and entwined, whereby it brings about the amalgamation in policy, practice and performance with augmented learning experiences and processes that provides a useful glimpse of the way specialists are thinking in the world market-place.

· Global globalised education
· English envisaged for global learners
· Learning liberated to greater heights of conform change
· Environment entwined platform in connecting people

From my session, participants can expect and obtain approaches for skills development and learning opportunities in group-based environments to assist further in the development of knowledge acquisition, preparation for the real world, future studies, thinking skills, multiple intelligences and ICT equipped for future lifelong learning and employability in the service of the world community for ever dispensing a revolutionary impact on a standard educational methodology globally.

I Come with Transformation (ICT) – Transforming the Deepest Aspects of Language via e-Learning

Priya Krishnan Pillai

Language and Compulsory Subjects Centre, Sunway University College, Malaysia

Using ICT and collaborating with Language Teaching and Learning has resulted in disparate findings especially in quality and complexity. Technology has indeed allowed students to enhance language learning using multiple modalities through interactive effects of the sound, animation, narration, and video. These practices signal potentially dramatic changes in assessment; putting more focus on creating electronic presentations than on attending to the content of the paper. In this paper, it is described that students using computers in a collaborative context demonstrated superior depth of understanding and reflection, as well as improved their Language scores. With this, it is construed that effective technology-rich environments allow for active student learning collaborative environments, immediate feedback, and authentic information. Thus, this serves as a vital function of not only helping students but also teachers to learn more about their own teaching.

An Apple To Think Different!

An apple a day keeps the doctor away contrary to an apple a day gets your day moving ahead …in this epoch of hi-tech fruition from iPods to iPhones to iPads – life is no where without it … It only gets us to Think Different!!!

When we talk about Apple, what comes to mind – only one thing – Steve Jobs - the eye of the Apple? The pantheon of the Apple evolution have certainly carved out a place in history, not one but numerous. Walk into a cafĂ©, you see people on iPods, strut into a shopping mall you would see hordes of people clinging onto their iPhones and tread into an mrt, lrt or monorail and have a glance at the scales of persons mining their iPads.

This remarkable edifice by only one man channelled scores of jobs to Jobs. Ever wondered, that the resignation of Steve Jobs will be a falling reign for many in the technological innovations. Jobs not only made creations but also with his magnitude of his technological brilliance also ascended as a pioneer from a failure in his career trajectory. Many might be wondering what lies ahead of his absence – well, Jobs known for his obsessive attention to detail will still remain as a back arm of support to pipeline further business advancement.

“Fifty or hundred years from now, we’ll look back on Apple products and think, ‘Steve Jobs made this,”. “That’s his cultural impact and his legacy to stardom.”

There’s a dog in your bag?

Once upon a time, the cell-phone was a way to chat with your friend while on the move.
It annoyed some people.

Today, after a very short evolutionary period, it’s not just a phone anymore. Through the power of wireless technology, it does just about everything except cook your dinner and iron your clothes.

Now it annoys lot more people – from fellow drivers to fellow cinema viewers.

It is probably one of the very few gadgets that can, and is expected to, perform so many different functions.

You don’t relish the thought of your washing machine doing your laundry in the morning and then washing your dishes at night, do you?

You can still use the cellphone for chatting, but consumers today look for so much more from it. They want to take pictures, shoot pictures, send pictures, watch music videos, organize themselves, play games, keep up with the news and stock prices, pay bills, check the weather, browse emails and websites, vote in elections … get the picture?

Not only does the technology wonder today come equipped with hands-free kits to help prevent you from falling foul of the law but you can also toss it on the front seat of the car and strike up a conversation through the stereo system of your car.

You can purchase airline tickets and check in for flights using your cellphone as well. What next?

Interactive games on the cellphone are predicted in some parts of the world as hotly popular. You can start your game at home and then as you drive to work, your phone rings to inform you that “your base is under attack!” and you can give instructions on your next course of life or death actions.

Drivers will no longer mind being stuck in traffic jams. Toll collections will rise as long as driving trips will mean more playing time.

Just the other day, I read about a feature that allows you to repel mosquitoes with your cellphone. A particular sound emitted by the phone promises to keep pests away. So if you’re out trekking in mosquito-infested areas, all you have to bring is your cellphone.

I wish they would come up with the same thing to repel flies. Then we Malaysians and anyone for that matter can be eating to their hearts desire at a “flies free” stall by the roadside that sells awesomely good food.

If all that isn’t enough, one mobile phone operator has begun selling handsets that allow people to indulge in some karaoke singing. These phones are being offered in
Thailand, but knowing the passion that Malaysians have for karaoke, they will be available here in no time.

Karaoke, as we all know, is best done in an acoustic-friendly room. Under ideal circumstances, singer and audience would both have a bit to drink, making even the worst of singers think they have talent, and the listeners grandmotherly patient.

You think you are getting good value from your train or bus ticket? Well, wait a while, the deal may get better. You could be getting free entertainment with the ride.

As for cellphone rings, nature sounds are already available as ring tones. A grunting pig, a roaring lion, a hissing snake, take your pick.

Imagine the scenario: a dog is barking inside your handbag. You take your phone out.

You: Hello?
Your friend: Hi, I’m at the mega sale and have spotted the perfect dress for that party.

You: Take a picture and send it to me.
Friend: But there are 25 people queueing up for the changing room.

You: Maybe you can entertain them with karaoke.
Friend: Good idea.

The phone barks again in a moment later.
Friend: Hi again. Jackpot. I got the dress. The other people bolted as soon as I started singing.
Come to think of it, it could be useful, this karaoke feature.
